    My Story

I am Sanchana, an Educational & Developmental Psychologist and founder of flourish inside out Psychology Services in Sydney’s lower north shore. I moved to Sydney on my own when I was 21 to pursue postgraduate studies with a dream to make Australia home. I spent my childhood living in the Middle East for some years and then in India. Having lived in three different countries and across three cultures, I have had to navigate feeling ‘different’ and often, not belonging during my younger years.

Since 2008, I have had experience working with children, adolescents and adults in schools, community mental health, hospital, and non-profit settings. I have also provided supervision to other psychologists and allied health practitioners since 2015.

    My areas of special interest:

    • Anxiety (generalised anxiety, social anxiety, panic, perfectionism, phobias, performance anxiety, imposter syndrome)
    • Depression
    • Grief and loss
    • Adjusting to chronic illness and complex medical issues
    • Life transitions (e.g. migration, career change, relationship status etc.)
    • Tics, Tourette’s, and Trichotillomania
    • PTSD
    • Stress and burnout
    • Cross-cultural issues
    • General wellbeing

Special groups I enjoy working with:

    My therapeutic approaches:

I am trained in and use Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) as my main modalities but I am also informed by positive psychology and compassion-focussed approaches. I work in a trauma-informed manner. I am an LGBTQIA+ ally and work in a culturally sensitive manner.

When not working, I enjoy creative writing, reading, going to music gigs, spending time at the beach, hiking, and doing the bidding of my two rescue cats.

    Experience:

Upon completing my postgraduate studies, I commenced working as a school psychologist at two different independent schools in Sydney. Following that, I worked in youth health, child and family health, and then for many years in child and adolescent mental health all in South Western Sydney Local Health District. I had a bit of a sea-change in 2016 and moved to the Central Coast. I worked for the Central Coast Local Health District CAMHS team for a couple of years, acted up as a team leader, completed a secondment at Wyong hospital Adult Inpatient unit, and then spent a year as a consultation-liaison clinician – a new role I helped set up. During this time on the coast, I also subcontracted in private practice. I returned to Sydney in December 2019 to work at the non-profit organisation, Canteen where I started as the team leader for the Sydney team and then worked as a National Clinical Advisor till April 2022. In late 2021, I decided to taking the leap into solo private practice and started gradually with a few hours a week and finally decided to focus on it full-time from May 2022.
